The Boston Bruins went on the road and won 2-0 against the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Canada on Saturday, February 12th. Boston goaltender, Jeremy Swayman (#1), secured a shutout saving all 30 shots that came his way.
Only 45 seconds into the first period, Boston left wing Trent Frederic (#11) put the Bruins on the scoreboard. Center Charlie Coyle (#13) put the puck through Ottawa defenseman Tim Stützle’s (#18) legs and dished the puck to right wing Craig Smith (#12) whose shot was stopped on a great save by Ottawa goalie Matt Murray (#30). Coyle passed the rebound to Frederic out front of the goal and Frederic put the puck past Murray. This was Frederic’s third goal of the season.
With 6:41 to go in the first period, Boston’s fourth line left wing Anton Blidh (#81) went the length of the ice and shot the puck, which was stopped by Murray. With 6:34 left, right wing Curtis Lazar (#20) was there for the rebound which reached the back of the net after hitting off his leg.
Bruins’ star left wing Brad Marchand (#63) was serving the second of his six-game suspension and Captain, center Patrice Bergeron (#37), was out with an upper body injury. The second and fourth line for the Bruins stepped up big time, securing both goals of the night and showing depth in the Boston offense.
In the second period, with 6:48 remaining, Murray made an insane save on Frederic’s shot after losing his stick. He sprawled forward and stopped the puck from crossing the goal line.
In the third period, with just under 12 minutes remaining, Bruins fourth line center Tomas Nosek (#92) passed the puck to Lazar, who shot the puck but had it stopped by Murray. Blidh netted the rebound, putting the Bruins up 3-0. This did not last long though because the goal was taken away following the challenge by Ottawa head coach, D.J. Smith, Boston was called for goaltender interference.
Both teams went into the game coming off shutout losses. The Bruins turned things around, and this was Swayman’s second shutout of the season and the fourth one of his career. Although Murray did not finish the night with a win, he still had 35 saves on the 37 shots he faced. He is not receiving any help from the offense, as the Senators have now been shut out in back-to-back contests where Murray has been in goal.
The next game for the Boston Bruins is on the road again against the New York Islanders on Thursday , February 17th at 7:30PM.
